Woodcraft School were the first company in the country to offer an accredited course designed specifically for bushcraft instructors in the UK. It is still the most indepth and comprehensive course of its kind and there are now two programmes dedicated to teaching trainee instructors both bushcraft techniques and how to deliver them.

You will not attend a raft of courses alongside the general public nor will you be expected to teach our courses on our behalf and pay for the privilege, instead, each of your sessions are dedicated solely to the development of first class bushcraft teachers and trainers and are attended only by such people. The outside groups we bring in to help develop your teaching skills do not pay us for the tuition. They are selected from groups within the local community who might otherwise struggle to attend a bushcraft course. This selection is designed to give you the best possible range of teaching experience and typically includes youth groups, mixes of children and adult only groups. The range of experience within these are vast from countryside professionals to complete novices so your need to adapt enhances the learning process and gives you a wide range of skills and activities to draw on in the future. Trainee instructors are given the task of planning, preparing and delivering these sessions in their own style and with their own emphasis, we are not in the business of producing Woodcraft School clones who teach exactly what we teach in the way that we teach it.

Upon completing the instructor course if students feel that they want to see Woodcraft School courses in action, we offer a volunteer placement where in return for helping with the cooking and preparation etc there is an oportunity to see first hand life on the otherside of the fence. This is free of charge, in fact we offer some travel expenses and for those who help out on a more regular basis it is possible to enrol on on our Primitive technology course also free of charge.

Duration and time comitment
We believe becoming a competent bushcraft instructor cannot be achived by spending couple of days here and there outdoors during the easist months of the year. You will spend five days a month in the forest throughout all the seasons. We aim to produce instructors who can individually cope with anything our climate can throw at them before they consider taking clients into the woods. In total this is 450 guided learning hours which appears on the certificate you receive to reflect the comprehensive nature of this very unique course.

You will also have a good deal of home study so be prepared to live, eat and sleep bushcraft for whole of the course. This is not an easy fast track programme because we are dedicated to making you the best possible practioners that you can become.

Acreditation and levels
Since its inception the calibre of students has consistently been extremely high, frequently surpassing the original Level 3 criteria. Following recommendation from external examiners and moderators we have confidently upgraded the Certificate in Bushcraft Leadership to a Level 4. In recognition of the high levels achieved consistently by our students and their desire to expand more on their professional status we have also introduced the new Level 5 Diploma in Bushcraft Leadership.

All students acepted through interview will be enrolled on the Level 4 programme and can take the options of also enroling on the Diploma for which there will be an additional charge of £250.00.

The whole programme is designed to equip you with the skills needed to instruct Bushcraft / Woodcraft courses and to lead groups in lowland Britain. The programme is working towards you achieving a certificate from a national awarding body in both expedition and leadership skills, as well as field study skills.

To get the most out of this course we would expect students to have at least a basic knowledge and understanding of the outdoor environment and outdoor industry. Our Advanced Bushcraft Award Level 3 is an ideal entry into this course.

To allow flexibility for the students, the course is taught over a full academic year consisting of 10 x five day blocks which start on Wednesdays and finish on Sundays. We have found this system allows students to attend the course and still remain fully employed. Students are also welcome to arrive the tuesday night before if they have a long way to travel.

Progression
The course also focuses on personal and professional development and will help identify specific needs and areas for further study to enable easy access into specific career paths. Past students have progressed to a variety of careers from setting up schools, becoming freelance instructors and finding roles as educational rangers or field studies officers. You may also consider enroling on the Diploma programme?

If you have any questions or would like more information about this course please feel free to contact us for an informal chat.

Fees
Please note that this is not a funded course and therefore we are unable to offer student funding that might be available in other colleges. We do have payment options, from regular monthly standing orders to 3 month lump sum payments.

Attendance dates –please note these dates are compulsory.

Diploma in Bushcraft Leadership - NEW
NCFE Level 5 - 250 guided learning hours

To make the course Level 5 standard, a good deal of the work must come from 'you' the student. You will be expected to discover and master new skills independently and then present your findings and demonstrate new found practical skills. The NCFE have supported us in this from its inception early last year and have now defined and graded the course in the following way:

Level 5

Competence that involves the application of a range of fundamental principles across a wide and often unpredictable variety of contexts. Very substantial personal autonomy and often significant responsibility for the work of others and for the allocation of substantial resources features strongly, as do personal accountabilities for analysis, diagnosis, design, planning, execution and evaluation.

The units are broadly speaking the same as for the Level 4 programme but ask you take these areas a bigger step further on your own. You will be expected to find a project for each of the units but you must choose from elements not actually taught by us on the Level 4 instructor course, or perhaps take one of the subjects covered and delve deeper.

You may choose for example to explore other fire making methods than the ones covered on the Level 4, researching and mastering hand drill for example, or as one past student has already done, research different woods and evaluate their suitability for bow drill. In the craft section you could choose to delve further into the world of primitive technology or traditional woodland crafts. Natural history may involve a deeper exploration in the world of herbal medicine, or further study into animal tracks and sign.

These are just a few thoughts but contact us to discuss your ideas.

It may be that you already have lots of suitable evidence from your previous studies with us for example the Primitive Technology NCFE Level 3 course or the Woodland Crafts NCFE Level 3. You may also consider our Natural History NCFE Level 4 awards in defining your area of study.

Entry requirements
You must have successfully completed the Certificate in Bushcraft leadership or be enrolled upon it.

Method of study and support
Woodcraft school staff will be on hand via phone and email to help with any issues arising from your studies. You will not be required to attend sessions on a regular basis and need only visit us to present your work. The presentation will be an informal interview involving some question and answers and any relevant demonstrations of your new found skills. If you need to see us outside of this plan in person we can schedule in a visit at a mutually convenient time.

Past and present Students
We have structured the new awards specifically with our students in mind. It would have been simple to add new learning outcomes to our existing course and increase the level. However, this would mean that past students wouldn't be recognised for (in many cases) the same standard of work and equally importantly not all current students are in a position timewise to work at a Level 5 standard. By creating two awards we have hopefully produced a solution which will be of benefit to all.

Past students can apply for the Diploma course for a fee of £250.00. For students who attended the programme over three years ago you need to be fully conversant in bushcraft skills and will be asked to show how current your knowledge is.
